Portugal’s secretary of state for tax affairs has said that an investigation has been opened into a tax authority operation on drivers in Alfena, near Porto, to collect tax debts.

He told Lusa that an investigation was opened to “know the entire framework of this operation and to understand whether or not all the taxpayers’ guarantees were respected.”

Previously, the ministry of finance ordered the cancellation of the supervisory activities of the Tax and Customs Authority (AT), in collaboration with GNR police force, aimed at intercepting drivers who had tax debts, trying to charge them on site.

About 20 authority members and 10 GNR members conducted, on Tuesday morning (May 28), a supervisory action of drivers, aiming to collect tax debts in Porto.

“If they are not able to pay at the moment, we are in a position to seize their cars,” the source said.
