Tizza clinched the second stage for his team, after Davide Appollonio won the tour’s first stage, completing the 158 km from Oliveira do Hospital in 4:02.53, or 11 seconds ahead of Spain’s Alejandro Marque of Sporting-Tavira, who also went out ahead of the pack and finished in second, 23 seconds ahead of Australia’s Zak Dempster in third.

Veloso, the tour winner in 2014 and 2015, finished the race in the first following pack to retain the yellow jersey, with a 15-second lead over his teammate João Rodrigues and a 22-second lead over Vicente García de Mateos of Aviludo-Louletano.

Tuesday sees a rest day in this 81st Volta a Portugal. The tour resumes on Wednesday, with the 189.2-km sixth stage from Torre de Moncorvo to Bragança.
