Johnson guarantees “full respect” for Portuguese in UK

The newly appointed British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has introduced himself to Portuguese PM António Costa while stressing the “respect” for Portuguese residents in the UK.

According to a report by Lusa news agency, Johnson called Costa on 12 August and said that he “guarantees the full respect of the rights of the Portuguese residing in the United Kingdom” after the country leaves the European Union.

Boris Johnson also expressed “a great desire to strengthen bilateral relations with Portugal” following Brexit.

According to Lusa, “both prime ministers agreed that it was very important to strengthen bilateral relations, namely in the areas of science and technology, sea and defence”, since they are both European and Atlantic countries.

During the call, the first between the two prime ministers, Boris Johnson also reiterated to António Costa the “position of the British government to reach an agreement for the United Kingdom to leave the EU by 31 October”, as planned.

In late July, Conservative party leader Boris Johnson was appointed British Prime Minister following the formal resignation of Theresa May due to the difficulties in applying Brexit.
