Jorge Fonseca, 26, became the first Portuguese to win a gold medal in World Cups by defeating Ilyasov, third in the 2018 World Cups.

The Sporting judoka, who was born in São Tomé and Príncipe, reached the decisive match by defeating Azeri Elmar Gasimov, runner-up in Rio 2016 and European champion in 2014, in the semi-finals, by waza-ari, after overcoming, in the quarterfinals, the Georgian Varlam Liparteliani, by ippon, in 3.15 minutes.

Jorge Fonseca had previously defeated Chilean Thomas Briceno, Indian Avtar Singh and Irish Benjamin Fletcher, securing Portugal's second World Cup medal in 2019, which is being played in Tokyo, after the silver won by Barbara Timo in -70 kg on Thursday.

In -73kg, Patricia Sampaio finished fifth, along with Slovenia's Klara Apotekar, losing the bronze medal match to Brazil's Mayra Aguiar, world champion in 2017.
