Last-ditch attempt to avoid strike as Government and unions meet

The Government and unions representing the civil service will be meeting later today to discuss the reduction of the working week from 40 to 35 hours.

The Socialist government had late last year pledged to have working days for state workers cut down to seven hours by July.

However, unions have said that they want the measure introduced straight away and have threatened industrial action for the last Friday of this month should today’s meeting fail to meet their expectations.
