Vale Olivial Beach in Lagoa municipality will be the operations centre for the activity “Let´s Clean the Sea” on 3 August starting at 11am. It will be the first edition of 2019 with a new “cleaning” schedule for 21 September on another beach in the county, which will coincide with the International Day of Coastal Cleaning. This is an underwater and beach cleaning initiative, which will see the mobilisation of volunteers and diving clubs.
“Let´s Clean the Sea” is an environmental education activity that is part of the 2019 European Blue Flag Campaign which this year has the theme “From the River to the Sea without Rubbish”.
New this year will be a “Beach Lab” equipped with binocular magnifying glasses and other laboratory materials from Sítio das Fontes, for identification of microplastics in the sand and in separation and identification of other items collected during this activity.
A challenge in 2019 , according to the European Blue Flag Association (ABAE), “is to continue to raise awareness of the fact that marine litter originates from land activities, the consequences of human behaviour and the role of rivers as a bridge between land and sea”. It is intended to warn about “the link between terrestrial and marine ecosystems and how life at sea is so dependent on small gestures in our homes. The initiative aims to involve everyone in the defence of the sea”.
Everyone is invited to participate for free and at the end of the event the registered participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt of the event.
The activity is an initiative of the Municipality of Lagoa, as part of a partnership of more than a decade with Portisub – Portimão Underwater Club, as a way to mobilise citizens for the sake of nature preservation, within the framework of the European Blue Flag Campaign.
