Lisbon has been elected the 2020 European Green Capital.

The decision was announced by the EU’s Environment Commissioner at a ceremony in the Netherlands.

This is the 11th year the competition has been held, with the Portuguese capital beating off the challenges by Ghenk in Belgium and the Finnish city of Lahti.

The status of European Green Capital is awarded annually to a European city, with a population over 100,000, for its commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability.
