Lisbon moves to extend shared-bike network after first phase falters

Lisbon’s municipal parking company is next week to open a public tender for the expansion of the city’s Gira shared-bicycle network.

The plan foresees a total of 350 docking stations for 3,500 bikes. An early contract was terminated last month on the grounds that it was unable to provide the service it was committed to.

Under the new scheme, thought to cost up to 50 million euros, about 80 percent of the bicycles should be electric and 20 percent traditional push-bikes.
