Lisbon underground replaces escalators as part of accessibility plan

The Lisbon underground will be replacing its escalators in downtown Baixa-Chiado from Monday, the company said.

The escalators will be replaced by “new and more resistant equipment in the face of the high flow of passengers that go through the station,” Lisbon underground said in a comuniqué.

The works, which will be carried out in two phases, involve an investment of €1.5 million.

The first phase is expected to be concluded by the end of this year and the second phase by the second half of 2019.

These works are part of the government's accessibility policies for elderly passengers and passengers with disabilities and involves works in 14 underground stations by 2023.
