Lisbon voted world's fourth most beautiful city

Those who have been or even live in the Portuguese capital will perhaps even argue that Lisbon should be placed higher than fourth in terms of its unique beauty.

But they will also agree that being placed behind Venice, Paris and Prague is no shame, and will greatly assist in boosting the city’s appeal, so often looked over by tourists in search of a European break.

In the latest edition of Urban City Guides, Lisbon came in ahead of Rio de Janeiro, Amsterdam, Florence, Rome, Budapest and Bruges in its list of the top ten most beautiful cities in the world.

“Magnificently sited on a series of hills running down to the grand Tagus River, Lisbon is one of the world's most scenic cities”, is how UCityGuides starts its description, adding: “Beautiful unexpected views are found at every turn down its colourful, picturesque streets, and especially from strategically-placed viewpoints or terraces at the top of each hill.

“The city has an unpolished, seductive appearance; an effortless beauty with captivating details such as cobbled designs, tiled façades, and pastel-coloured buildings blending together to give it a singular atmosphere now lost in so many other cities.

“In such a stunning place, it's no wonder that many of the world's great explorers questioned what other beauties lay beyond the horizon when they departed from here in the 15th century.”

But the Guide did not only single out Lisbon for special mention.

Portugal as a country was listed sixth in its ranking of the world’s top ten most beautiful countries, coming in behind Italy, Spain, France, Australia and Greece, but ahead of the USA, Brazil, South Africa and Germany.

In its summary of Portugal, the Guide focuses on “the pristine natural wonders of the volcanic Azores alone, Portugal would be on this list.

“Then there's the "floating garden" that is Madeira, the dramatic coastline and mystical capes of the mainland, the serene plains of the Alentejo with the stunningly-sited white medieval vilages of Marvão and Monsaraz, the Peneda-Gerês National Park, or the perfect collaboration of man and nature in the magic fantasy of Sintra and verdant Douro Valley”.

No mention was made of the Algarve.

Deserved. Lisbon is beautiful covered by its beautiful weather all year long. The sea and the river is visible from all parts of the city. The castle is in the middle of the city bringing it a medieval atmosphere. The wine is one of the best, red, white, port or rosé, and it is ridiculously cheap. The beaches are 20min away from the city center. The airport, also in the city center is connected to all the city by the tube.

Worth visiting folks!

Look, I know these things are subjective, but are you kidding me? I like Lisbon, but I sure didn't get a great vibe from the city, nor was I blown away by the architecture, etc.

Portugal itself is a beautiful country, but Lisbon is definitely not in the top 5...or even in the top 10!

´Unpolished´what a nice word for Rotting Teeth. If Lisboa was a set of teeth, the dentist would have a great job ahead of him/her.
Lisboa is a poorly dressed, but nice lady, with a bad smell and some dental work to be done.
But a nice character she has, that´s undeniable. Easy to fall in love with. So did I a long time ago.
