Loulé implements “Safe Village, Safe People” programme

In liaison with local authorities, Loulé City Council, through the Municipal Civil Protection Service, implemented the “Safe Village, Safe People” Programme, with the objective of preventing and mitigating the effects of rural fires through awareness raising actions for the prevention of risky behaviours, dissemination of self-protection measures and conduct of evacuation drills.

This programme was implemented in 18 clusters, in the parishes considered as priority of the municipality in the area of ??forest fires: Alte, Salir, Union of Parishes Querença, Tôr and Benafim and Ameixial.

In each cluster a local security officer has been appointed, who will be the liaison between the population and civil protection officers should the cluster be evacuated. Shelters and / or refuges were also defined in each cluster and information and sensitization actions were carried out.

The implementation of the programme culminated in the execution of an evacuation simulation in each population group, where the Loulé City Council gave the official a megaphone and an air horn to facilitate communication with the population.

On the day of the exercise, the security officer put in place the strategies outlined so that all inhabitants could go to the meeting point defined in their cluster evacuation plan.

In these exercises the Municipal Civil Protection Service counted on the collaboration of GNR, Municipal Fire-fighters, Portuguese Red Cross, parish councils, associations and clubs of local hunters.
