An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale was felt on 11 March on the island of São Miguel, announced the Azores Seismovolcanic Surveillance and Information Centre (CIVISA).

According to CIVISA, the earthquake was recorded at 8.05pm (9.05pm in Lisbon) and had an epicentre about 49 kilometres west-northwest of Ginetes.

“According to the information available so far, the earthquake was felt with maximum intensity II / III (Modified Mercalli Scale) in Ginetes, Candelária and Feteiras (municipality of Ponta Delgada)”, adds CIVISA on its website.

This is very interesting considering the islands are volcanic. Could this mean there may be volcanic activity in the near future?
