Environment Minister João Pedro Matos Fernandes said Portugal did more than countries like Ireland and the United Kingdom, who have already declared a climate emergency.

He said it was a "symbolic act" but that both countries did nothing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste produced or to increase the production of energy from renewable sources.
