More than 30 drivers a day caught under the influence

More than 1,800 people were arrested for driving with an alcohol level equal to or higher than 1.2 between in July and August.

As part of the “Operation Hermes” by the GNR, during that period they stopped 266,000 drivers, registered 5,067 with excess alcohol, 1,849 of who were detained for driving at a rate higher than allowed by law.


Another 864 drivers were detained for not having a valid driving licence.


Over the course of “Operation Hermes” the police also recorded about 103,000 road traffic offences of which 31,913 were for speeding, 4,867 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 4,387 for problems with lights or indicators.


Of the administrative offences recorded, 3,434 were for lack or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child restraint systems, 2,980 for improper use of mobile phones while driving, 2,323 for lack of compulsory civil liability insurance and 240 for lack or incorrect use of helmets.


The operation, which took place between June 28 and September 1, aimed at supervising and supporting drivers on roadways during their trips to holiday locations and “events during this time of the year”.
