The tourist accommodation sector should have had 157,800 guests and 324,300 overnight stays in May, 93.9 percent and 95.0 percent less than in the same month of 2019, announced the National Statistics Institute (INE) on 30 June.

This quick estimate by INE compares with the year-on-year changes in the number of guests and overnight stays in April, when declines of 97.4 percent and 97.0 percent were recorded, respectively.

The INE also states that, in year-on-year terms, residents 'overnight stays will have decreased by 85.6 percent (against a 93.0 percent fall in April) and non-residents' overnight stays will have decreased by 98.1 percent (against a decline of 98.6 percent in the previous month).

In May, around 69.7 percent of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or there was no movement of guests, stresses the INE.
