The Port of Mindelo will harbour about 60 boats that will be in the race, in the edition that will take place between 2021 and 2022, in what will be one of the fastest stops.

"We are very happy to have been chosen to be one of the stops of the 2021-22 edition of the Ocean Race and we are very proud to be the first West African country to do so", Cabo Verde’s prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva told reporters.

Cabo Verde also becomes the second African country to host the competition, after South Africa and Cape Town.

For the fifth time in a row, the next Ocean Race will depart from Alicante, Spain, and will stop in The Hague, the Netherlands, and Aarhus, Denmark, in addition to Cape Verde.

According to the organization, more destinations will be announced in the coming weeks.
