Over 1,200 firefighters on the ground at midnight

More than 1,200 firefighters and one aircraft were involved in fighting 47 fires in Portugal at 0:00 on Monday morning, with two fires near Viseu the most worrying, according to the Civil Protection (ANEPC).

Of the 47 fires, four are in progress, four under control and 39 being finished, the ANEPC website showed.

Of the important occurrences, Civil Protection highlighted a fire in Moledo, near Castro Daire, and Valbom, near Cinfães, both in the district of Viseu.

The first is being attacked by 229 firefighters and 64 vehicles means; the second, by 87 firefighters and 25 vehicles, ANEPC said.

The fire in Monteiras, near Castro Daire, which was among the most worrisome, on Saturday, began to be resolved 17:45, according to the Viseu fire brigade, and is now being completed, involving 93 firefighters and 29 vehicles.

The aircraft in operation is in Vale do Calvo, near Santarém, where a fire is almost out.

Provisional data from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) indicate that this year up until Saturday, there had been 9,186 fires and 31,328 hectares had been lost to the flames.
