Parliament has approved two draft resolutions recommending the suspension of dredging in the Sado River, carried out as part of the project to improve maritime access to the Port of Setúbal.

Two draft resolutions recommending that the Government revoke the authorization granted to the Administration of the Port of Setúbal to carry out dredging on the Sado River were rejected.

The project for the improvement of maritime access to the Port of Setúbal foresees the removal of 6.5 million cubic meters of sand from the Sado estuary in two phases, the first of which, for the removal of 3.5 million cubic meters, was already awarded by the Port Administration (APSS) and in execution since Thursday of last week.

The problem of depositing part of the dredged sand in the so-called Restinga area of the river, which is opposed by Setúbal's fishermen's organizations because it is a fishing area and is considered of great importance for the reproduction of several species, is still unresolved.
