The municipalities of Almeida in Portugal and Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain are working together on the creation of a “Eurocity” on the border at Vilar Formoso, to allow for the development of shared projects.

According to the mayor of Almeida, António José Machado, the plan for the future Vilar Formoso/Fuentes de Oñoro/Almeida/Ciudad Rodrigo conurbation has been encouraged by the development authority for Portugal’s Centre region, the CCDRC.

The initiative also involves the parish council of Vilar Formoso and the equivalent body in Fuentes de Oñoro in Spain, among other municipalities of that frontier territory.

The planned new Eurocity should make it possible for all participating municipalities to link up for projects “that are of regional interest,” Machado said, adding that the existing cooperation “is already very good”, for example within a cross-border consortium bringing together walled towns on both sides of the frontier.

According to Machado, the Eurocity will also help in obtaining funding from the European Union and in putting the cross-border territories “on the map”.

In order to implement the project, meetings have been held between the municipality of Almeida, the parish council of Vilar Formoso, the Spanish ayuntamientos of Fuentes de Oñoro and of Ciudad Rodrigo, as well as a technical visit to the existing Iberian Eurocity Chaves/Verin.

At the end of September, representatives of the four municipalities leading the initiative are to hold a meeting with other Spanish authorities in the area covered, so that they can also join the project to create the Vilar Formoso/Fuentes de Oñoro/Almeida/Ciudad Rodrigo Eurocity.

The initiative comes at a time when the mayors of border towns fear the effects on local cross-border links of the completion of the final section of the motorway between Vilar Formoso and Fuentes de Onõro (designated A25 in Portugal and A62 in Spain), which is expected shortly.
