António Costa stated these environmental objectives at a speech at the start of the fortnightly debate in parliament, when he reiterated the idea that Portugal should be carbon neutral by 2050, in accordance with its international commitments in this area.

"We have heard the appeals of thousands of young people who have been mobilised by the Student Climate Strike.

It is our commitment to reach 2030 without coal-fired power stations and have a third of passengers moved by electricity, he said.
