The airport, on the island of São Miguel, celebrated on 24 August, 50 years of being officially open, a date that was marked with events aimed at passengers and anyone visiting the public area of the airport.

Noting the anniversary, ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal and Vinci Airports promote the 50 Years campaign of Ponta Delgada Airport - “We only changed for the better”, which was launched in June, highlighting the “best in the Azores, environmental balance and wildlife, regional culture and sustainable development”.

Open to civil traffic under the name of Nordela Airport in 1969, the current Ponta Delgada - João Paulo II Airport is the “main gateway to the Azores archipelago” and the “passenger distribution and concentration platform from or to other island destinations”.

In addition to the SATA and TAP flag carriers, low-cost airline Ryanair, which had a base on the island of São Miguel, operates regularly at Ponta Delgada airport.
