Portugal 8th best for water

Portugal is the eighth best country in the EU when it comes to bathing waters, with 91.1% of the 608 areas surveyed in 2018 registering as "excellent"

According to data published by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency, 554 (91.1%) of the 608 Portuguese bathing areas monitored last year were "excellent", more than 529 (87.7%) of 603 registered in 2017.

Also in 2018, 29 (4.8%) of Portuguese bathing areas presented a "good" quality, while nine (1.5%) had "sufficient" and two (0.3%) "mediocre".

Another 14 national bathing areas were not classified.

The EU average last year was 85.1%, a slight increase (by one percentage point) compared to 2017.

Overall, 95.4% of the 21,831 bathing areas monitored in the 28 Member States meet the minimum quality requirements under the EU rules.
