The Minister of Health revealed on 5 May that Portugal currently has more than 620 type 3 intensive care beds and pointed to the opening of a new unit in Matosinhos as "another step" for the European average.

“We have about 620 type 3 intensive care beds. And then we have paediatric, neonatal, burn-out intensive care units. Therefore, general intensive care beds already exceed 620,” said Marta Temido, speaking to journalists in Matosinhos, Porto district, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new facilities, which took place in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic.

Of the total of 25,702 infected with covid-19 registered in Portugal, 818 are hospitalized, of which 134 are in intensive care units.

Referring to the new intensive care unit at Pedro Hispano Hospital, in Matosinhos, which opened with a capacity of 11 beds and built in 20 days, the minister said it was another response to bring Portugal closer to the European average of “more than 11 beds per every hundred thousand inhabitants”.
