Portugal issues ‘Panda Bonds’ this month

Portugal’s finance ministry confirmed to Lusa that the country has received the ‘green light’ from the Chinese authorities to issue public debt in Chinese currency.

The operation is to take place at the end of May.

The so-called ‘Panda Bonds’ will be issued on 29 and 30 May, corresponding to €260 million, with a three-year maturity.

The idea of issuing ‘Panda Bonds’ arose two years ago, following a visit of Portugal’s prime minister António Costa to China.
