Health Minister Marta Temido said that the recent European Health Report shows that investment in the sector in Portugal "needs to be strengthened" but underlined that the document is "good" for the country.

"The 2019 report on the state of health in the EU shows that investment in health in Portugal needs to be strengthened and that is what we are working on. That's what we did during the previous legislature, that's what we're working towards for the next State Budget".

Marta Temido highlighted the "very positive results" that the report attributes to Portugal in terms of primary health care, vaccination coverage, avoidable hospitalisations, increased average life expectancy and "good trends" in avoidable mortality.

For the minister, the Government's priority is to strengthen the NHS network and improve access to and qualification in health care provision.

"It is not enough to put more money into the NHS, a significant effort is needed in terms of organisation and adoption of good international practices".

According to the minister, primary health care, better integration of continued care, home hospitalisation and "high priority" to mental health are the main challenges.
