Portugal plans to repatriate on 31 July another 200 national citizens who were stranded in Venezuela due to the preventive quarantine of covid-19, said the consul-general of Portugal, Licínio Bingre do Amaral in Caracas today.

“There are around 200 Portuguese who are going to travel on this flight, the overwhelming majority going to Funchal. We have about 40 Italians, some Venezuelans and Spanish on the flight on 31 July, said Licínio Bingre do Amaral.

Speaking to Lusa agency, the diplomat explained that for people wishing to be repatriated from Venezuela “it is still mandatory that they have residence” in Portugal.

Licínio Bingre do Amaral admitted that there are “some slight exceptions”, such as “people who have a very complicated health situation and have to go for medical treatment.”

“These are exceptions that we allow”, he underlined.

When asked about how the relationship with the Venezuelan authorities has been in regard to coordinating the flight, the second organised by the Portuguese consulate, the consul-general answered that there exists “total collaboration.”

Since March, 257 Portuguese have been repatriated from Venezuela, 181 of them on 13 June, on a flight organizsd by Portugal.

At least 76 Portuguese returned to Portugal on other flights organised by the European Union, Spain and France.

The new flight, organised by Portugal, is scheduled for 31 July and “the cost of each plane ticket is €821”, reveals Licínio Bingre do Amaral.

Only citizens demonstrably resident in Portugal or another European country had access to purchase tickets.

Portuguese who want to be repatriated must inform the consulate and send a copy of their Portuguese passport and, in the case of citizens with dual nationality, also a copy of the Venezuelan passport.

They must also provide proof of residence in Portugal or another European country, indicate the city and full address where they are currently located in Venezuela, an email address, landline and mobile phone numbers.

There are hundreds of thousands of Portuguese people living in Venezuela! Given the sanctions imposed by the USA and EU countries on Maduro's government, the Venezuelan people has been suffering all sorts of privations. This includes many of the local Portuguese residents! The serious restrictions imposed by the "socialist* Government of Portugal to the return of many Portuguese to their original country is unacceptable! As long as Venezuela was in good economic shape the Portuguese who had emigrated to Venezuela were welcomed to visit and re-established themselves in Portugal. Not now anymore due to blind or stupid policies! Now is much easier for any foreign national than for the Portuguese to go back and re-establish themselves in Portugal. The Portuguese emigrants are only good to send their monies there to assist family members that were left behind. Portugal is now open to any Middle East refugee but not to its own people if you don't have all the papers and a residence there?
