Portugal responsible for over half the area lost to fires in Europe

Portugal is responsible for more than half of the area burnt in Europe this year with almost 117,000 hectares, four times more than the average that burnt between 2008 and 2015, the civil protection experts said.

This means that "about 53.4% of all the area burnt in Europe was in Portugal" they said.

Last week there were several huge wild fires mainly in the centre and north of the country and on the island of Madeira, where houses were destroyed and three people lost their lives.
