In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) states that as of 19 August, a cold frontal surface, associated with the Ellen depression, “of moderate activity and with slow displacement” will approach the continent's territory.

According to the institute, more intense rain is expected on 19 August in Minho and Douro Litoral and on 20 August in the remaining regions of the North and Centre.

“The South region will temporarily have an increase in cloudiness with the possibility of low precipitation occurring in Alto Alentejo”, is mentioned in the note.

The IPMA also said that sea turbulence on the west coast will gradually increase, with northwest waves measuring two to three metres north of Cabo Raso on 21 August.

The Ellen depression, named by the Irish Meteorological Service (Met Eireann), will affect part of the nationally responsible sea areas.
