Portugal with high proportion of inmates

Portugal has an imprisonment rate above the European average, with 131 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to figures from the Council of Europe, the overall imprisonment rate in Europe fell by 6.6 percent between 2016 and 2018, from 109.7 to 102.5 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants.

The figures also included those from non-EU countries such as Russia and Ukraine. In Portugal, the number of foreign inmates accounted for 16 percent of all those serving time.
