The Public Prosecutor's Office of Geneva confirmed to Lusa the death today of a Portuguese emigrant in Switzerland shot by the authorities on Monday, following a case of domestic violence.

In a written response to a request for clarification sent today by Lusa, a source of the Geneva public prosecutor said that the man died this morning.

Asked about the health of the Portuguese woman, who police forces found shot inside the couple's home in the Acacias neighborhood in Geneva, the source did not provide any information.

The source sent further clarifications about the case to a press release from the public prosecutor, issued on Monday, after the case was revealed by the Swiss newspaper "Bom Dia".

In the statement, sent today to Lusa by the public prosecutor's office, it is explained the intervention of the police forces that rushed to the Acacias neighborhood around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, alerted to a case of domestic violence.

The alert was given by neighbours of the Portuguese couple, the man was born in the municipality of Caminha and the woman in Viana do Castelo, both in Alto Minho.

The public prosecutor justified the shot fired by one of the three police officers facing the threat of a knife that the Portuguese man held.

Inside the couple's residence, the authorities found the woman with gunshot wounds.

Contacted by Lusa, source of the office of the Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities, Berta Nunes, confirmed it was a Portuguese citizen and said she was following the case through the consulate of Portugal in Geneva.
