Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace in Belém, Lisbon, following a reception for the Portuguese national team, Rebelo de Sousa said he was a “man of faith” and admitted he had prayed repeatedly for the result, as had national team coach Fernando Santos.

"We prayed a lot of Rosaries. A lot. I will probably go to Fátima because of that,” he said.

The Portuguese national team beat France 1-0 in the final of the Euro 2016 championship held Sunday night in Paris.

The team was welcomed Monday in Lisbon by thousands of fans who lined the city’s streets.
