In a statement, the office of the secretary of state for agriculture and food, Luís Medeiros Vieira, said that this was the first time that the Chilean market would receive Portuguese exports of fresh poultry meat.

It is "the result of the very strong investment in the opening of markets and the internationalisation of national production by this government."

"With the Chilean market, the number of markets opened by this government has risen to 57, making it possible to export a total of 226 products (171 of animal origin and 55 of vegetable origin)."

Exports of agri-food products registered a growth rate of 4.6% in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2018.

The ministry of agriculture is working "intensively" to open 58 more markets for the export of 270 products, of which 224 are animal products and 46 are plant products.
