The districts of Faro, Beja and Évora are under a red weather warning between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm on 20 October, due to the intense rain and strong wind brought by the Bárbara depression, according to the latest update from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The Barbara depression has now arrived in the south of Portugal, bringing with it localised flooding in the east of the Algarve.

According to IPMA website the “rain is sometimes heavy and persistent and occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms and possibility of occurrence of extreme wind up to 120km/h”. After 6:00 pm small improvements are expected and the alert will turn to yellow.

Civil Protection advises that people should take extra care when driving and to avoid parking near trees.
