Road deaths in urban areas over New Year's period triple year ago

Six people died in road accidents in areas in Portugal policed by the PSP urban force over the New Year’s period, four more than in 2018, although there were 715 fewer accidents recorded.

In a statement on the operation, the PSP announce that it had detained 605 people, seized almost 60,000 doses of drugs, and issued almost 10,000 tickets for administrative offences.

In the 2,348 accidents recorded during the operation there were, however, 15 fewer serious injuries than in 2018 (22) and 248 fewer minor injuries 676).

On average, there were 157 accidents per day and 46 people injured.

Of the detentions, 193 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, 42 for drug trafficking and seven for illegal possession of a weapon. Thirty weapons were also seized, of which 10 were firearms.

Of the administrative offences, the largest number (1,880) was for speeding, 151 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 487 for vehicle inspections not being up to date, and 192 for using a mobile phone while driving.

PSP officers also seized 188 kg of explosives that were transported without observing safety rules.
