Portuguese footballers Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes are among the 50 nominees for the UEFA 2019 team of the year, whose online vote started on Tuesday.

Bruno Fernandes, 'captain' of Sporting and the highest scoring midfielder in Europe in 2018/19, with 32 goals, is the only representative of Primeira Liga, while Cristiano Ronaldo competes for the 14th presence in the team of the year, now in the service of the Italian champions Juventus, already holding the record in this distinction.

Bernardo Silva, an English champion with Manchester City, is the other Portuguese named in a list that also includes three former Benfica players, goalkeepers Ederson (Manchester City) and Oblak (Atlético de Madrid) and Di María (Paris Saint-Germain).

Ronaldo has been nominated for the 16th consecutive year, a record, and is the oldest of nominees, at 34, while Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain) is the youngest, at 20.

Lionel Messi looks for the 11th presence in the ideal 'eleven' for fans, while Sergio Ramos seeks the ninth in a list dominated by the European champion, Liverpool, with 10 nominees, including UEFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk.

Almost half of the nominees are newcomers (24), with a total of 14 clubs and 21 countries represented, on a list in which the English League has 25 nominees.

In a statement, UEFA announced that the supporters' team has an open vote until 9 January, when the 'eleven' of the year will be revealed, with the 50 chosen for their performances between January and December 2019.

According to the top body of European football, performances in UEFA competitions (Champions League and European League, in addition to the League of Nations and qualifying for Euro2020) have more weight in the evaluation.
