The Republican National Guard (GNR), from June 15 to September 30, intensified patrolling, visibility and support actions throughout the National Territory, with particular emphasis on beaches, parties, pilgrimages and large events, as well as the main roads, namely the land borders, seeking to ensure the safety and well-being of the Portuguese population and the thousands of tourists and migrants who visited Portugal.

In this context, the reinforcement of policing also had the purpose of preventing and combating crime, through the commitment of different GNR skills, such as territorial, traffic, nature and environment protection, criminal investigation, intervention and public order. To promote and facilitate policing of proximity to tourists and in an environment of international cooperation, the Guard carried out joint patrols with military personnel from the Guardia Civil of the Kingdom of Spain, the French Gendamarie Nationale and the Carabinieri of Italy, especially in the more touristy bathing areas of the Algarve, Porto, Lisbon and Setúbal districts.

Considering that one of the priorities is road safety and accident prevention, GNR has privileged preventive action, directing the effort on the most critical routes, during the travels, to and from the summer resorts and events of different nature, ensuring smooth traffic, supporting all road users and providing them with safe travel.

From the patrols and surveillance actions carried out by the GNR during the referred period 1,968 people were detained. Of these, 698 were detained for drug trafficking, 254 for theft and 208 for illegal possession of a weapon or for possession of a prohibited weapon. The GNR also seized 96,164 doses of drugs, namely 90,444 doses of hashish, 4,350 doses of cocaine and 1,370 doses of heroin.

During the period of the operation around 435 thousand drivers were inspected and 7,847 alcohol excesses were recorded, of which 2,923 were arrested for driving with a crime rate of 1.2 grams per litre (g / l) to which 1,320 detainees for lack of legal driving ability are added.

During the operation, around 166,577 highway offenses were detected, 48,456 of which for speeding, 8,122 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 7,445 related to anomalies in lighting and signalling systems, 5,472 for lack or incorrect use of seat belts and / or child restraint systems, 4,924 for driving with a higher blood alcohol rate than permitted by law and 5,314 for misuse of mobile phone while driving.

Under the Key Direct Programme, which aims to ensure the security of the habitual residences of citizens who are on vacation, by conducting patrolling actions during the absence of their owners, the GNR has carried out surveillance of 2,004 residences, without any incidents relating to them.
