Sintra is to start levying a tourist tax from next year, with revenue from it to be used to fund the rehabilitation of the town's historic centre.

The tax is to be levied at the rate of two euros per room in Sintra hotels, per night for up to three nights, the city’s mayor told journalists after a debate on plans to upgrade Sintra town centre. Sintra is visited by some 5 million tourists a year.
