Sir Cliff charity event raises over €10,000

A fundraising event held on Monday night at the Quinta do Miradouro – better known as Sir Cliff Richard’s Adega do Cantor winery, in Guia, Albufeira (Algarve) – raised in excess of €10,000 for the Peta Birch Community Association, set up in memory of the long-term Algarve resident who was tragically killed in an accident on the EN125 in March last year.

More than five hundred people attended the event, which marked a year since the launch of the Peta Birch Association and was organised to “celebrate and remember the life of Peta Birch”.
Among the hundreds of guests were a group of several dozen dedicated Cliff Richard fans who had travelled from across Europe and as far away as Australia purposely to be at the event.
The “evening of wine and music” was hosted by Sir Cliff and his partners at the winery, Nigel and Lesley Birch, and held in memory of philanthropist Peta who during her many years in the Algarve founded and supported a number of humanitarian set-ups.
The event was staged in a stunning setting at the Adega do Cantor, overlooking the seemingly endless vineyards that roll gently down to a sparkling coastline and which produce the singer’s famous Vida Nova wine.
The inspiring setting was perfect for the night’s first musical act, the Italian SUONIAMO young musicians’ orchestra, which played captivating renditions of tracks from popular films including Lord of the Rings and The Lion King, alongside well-known hits from the stage, among them an accomplished Phantom of the Opera medley.

Following the orchestra the star of the evening, Sir Cliff Richard himself, sang a set of nine songs much to the delight of the jubilant audience.
The evening was, as one guest told The Portugal News, “absolutely brilliant” and in aid of a notable cause.
Having moved to the Algarve 43 years ago, for 35 of those years Peta Birch helped the children of Albufeira’s Santa Casa da Miséricordia through fundraising and other means.
Shortly after their arrival in the Algarve Peta and her family donated a piece of land for what became the Pirilampos children’s home and also helped set up the Amigos das Crianças organisation, which helps the young children at Pirilampos as well as the older children at the Gaivota home.
She also helped with the Casa da Paz, a facility that houses disabled people, as well as being involved with Roma children in Albufeira, and co-founded and ran the ARC Horse Welfare Community for neglected and mistreated horses while volunteering with the SOS Algarve Animals association, rescuing and fostering dogs and cats.
Through the Peta Birch Community Association her family aims to “continue the invaluable work she did”, and no doubt Monday evening’s contribution will go a long way towards achieving that goal.

I'm overwhelmed that such beautiful soul existed and sad that she's no longer with us. Maybe God needed another angel! Thank you to everyone that works so hard to keep up her legacy, and a BIG hug to Cliff Richard, always a favorite of mine (big crush on him in my youth!), not just as a singer, but especially as a wonderful human being. God bless you all.
