Six month suspension

Former Sporting star and Portugal international Gelson Martins, now plying his trade with Monaco, has been handed a 6-month suspension by the French football authorities.

During Monaco’s game against Nîmes Olympique, at the beginning of February, Martins repeatedly pushed referee Mikael Lesage in retaliation for his teammate Tiémoué Bakayoko being sent-off; Martins was soon to follow for an early bath.
His actions received strong condemnation from the referees’ union in France, who slammed the events as “shameful, intolerable, unbearable, indefensible, inadmissible and should not happen on a football pitch.”

Gelson joined Monaco on a permanent deal last summer from Atlético Madrid for a fee of €30m, having impressed during a loan spell in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign. CW
