The annual rate of change of the Portuguese Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 0.4 percent in April, down from 0.7 percent in March, according to the estimate issued by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

According to INE, the estimated annual variation of the underlying inflation indicator (total index excluding unprocessed food and energy) was 0.2 percent in April (the final value in March was 0.8 percent).
“The deceleration of the CPI reflects in part a base effect, with significant price increases in April 2017 observed in the Easter period,” INE noted.
The monthly variation of the CPI was 0.7 percent (after a 1.9 percent variation in March) and the average variation of the last 12 months was 1.1 percent (which compares with 1.2 percent recorded in the previous month).

As for the Portuguese Harmonised Consumer Price Index (HCPI), INE estimated that it registered a year-on-year change of 0.3 percent (0.8 percent in March).
The definitive figures for the month of March will be published on 11 May.
