A contingent of 78 soldiers will form part of the monitoring system for forest fires starting from today for an indefinite period of time.

The 78 soldiers will carry out land surveillance and deterrent patrols in 14 districts of mainland Portugal, in support of emergency and civil protection forces, and will be distributed in 26 patrols - 16 of the Army and 10 of the Navy.

At eh stasrt of the week, Civil Protection alerted to the worsening risk of fire during this week with risk values "very high to maximum" throughout the mainland, because of the increase in temperature and decrease in humidity.

According to the Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this week temperatures will rise to between 30-35ºC and may go higher in the interior.
