Lisbon and Porto lead the list of the top cities in Portugal with the most popular terraces, while in the Algarve it is Loulé and Faro who head the list.

The ranking, compiled by TheFork includes restaurants that not only have stunning terraces to sit on, but also the best in food and drink.

Torreão restaurant in Porto heads the list, followed by Le Chat in Lisbon, Estaminé in Faro, La Paparrucha in Lisbon, Digby restaurant and Bar in Porto, Ria Formosa Restaurante in Faro, Monica’s in Almancil, Este Oeste in Lisbon and finally Soul Garden also in Lisbon.

Restaurants with terrace seating options are not only a hit with diners in Portugal, they also prove to be very lucrative for business owners with the average expenditure in a restaurant with a terrace being €28.20, compared to €25 for a restaurant without.

It comes as no surprise to hear that during the summer months, dinners are looking to enjoy their food al fresco. The study found that 33 percent of all bookings in the country were for restaurants with a terrace in the summer, with 49 percent choosing these locations for lunch and 51 percent for dinner.

The top form of cuisine served in restaurants with a terrace was found to be Portuguese and contemporary cuisine, showing the continued preference of dinners who are looking for a taste of the traditional and the modern in Portugal.
