Tagus river pollution the worst environmental occurrence of 2015

Portuguese environmental group Quercus has elected the persistent pollution of the Tagus River as the worst environmental incident of the year. It also elected the taxation of shopping bags as the best move in favour of the environment of 2015.

The list, which was released on Monday night, indicated that some of the other negative ecological events of the year were the Volkswagen emissions scandal, the increase in eucalyptus tree plantations and forest fires.

The group also criticised recycling targets set out for 2020, which state that rural areas have to recycle 80 percent of their waste while cities of Lisbon and Oporto are only expected to recycle 42 and 35 percent.
