In a statement, TAP said that it has carried more than 11.3 million customers since the beginning of the year, which represents an increase of 6.7% compared to the same period last year.

The recovery of the Brazilian market influenced the increase in the number of passengers carried on routes in Brazil, which continues to show signs of recovery, the company said, adding that after the first quarter with little demand (6.9% fewer passengers carried compared to the same period last year), August consolidated the trend of increased demand in this market already observed in the second quarter and July.

After transporting 10.9% more passengers on Brazilian routes in July, in August the increase exceeded 11.2%, which represents an increase of 17,000 passengers compared to 2018, to a total of 170,000.

According to the company, the biggest increase in absolute value was, however, in Europe, with more than 79 thousand passengers transported and an increase of 8.5% year-on-year.

This was followed by North America, with more than 39,000 passengers and a growth of 51.7% (the highest percentage of growth concerning the same period last year), and since January TAP transported to Portugal 35,000 more passengers from North America, who stayed at least one night in the country.

On flights to and from Africa, TAP carried a total of 134,000 passengers, 17.3% more than last year.

The month of August was also the month in which the Portuguese airline transported more passengers on routes to the Azores and Madeira, having reached 165,000 passengers and a 10% increase in the total number of routes to and from the autonomous regions.

As for the new routes inaugurated by TAP this year, they contributed with more than 99,000 passengers carried on the company's network throughout August: in Europe the new routes contributed with more than 56,000 passengers, in the North Atlantic with more than 29,000 and the Middle East (Tel Aviv), with more than 9,000.

Considering the results of the second quarter of TAP, there was an increase of 8.9% in the number of passengers carried compared to the same period last year, after the decrease of 0.3% in the first quarter.

TAP flies to 90 destinations in 36 countries, operating on average 3,000 flights per week and having a fleet of 100 aircraft.
