Global GPS service provider TomTom has signed a protocol with Algarve-based emergency support service iMergencies to equip the main fire engines in a number of municipalities across the region with GPS devices.

iMergencies is an Algarve-based entity that provides emergency and assistance services to residents and tourists in the region, as well as providing this service to the fire brigade, INEM, Red Cross and other authorities. With a specialised team and the use of digital maps via satellite, as well as an interpreting service, iMergencies aims to provide assistance efficiently. Their range of services includes ensuring members are found quickly by emergency services, that ambulance crews have knowledge in advance of medical issues and the elimination of language barriers and misunderstandings in case of emergencies through a translation service into six different languages.

As part of the new protocol, a number of fire engines in Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Alcoutim, Albufeira and São Bartolomeu de Messines will be fitted with TomTom GPS systems providing door to door instructions and the quickest routes available, according to the time and day of the week, to the destination. Through the protocol, iMergencies hopes to significantly improve fire fighter response times.
