US Secretary of State to fly to Lisbon after NATO summit

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, is to visit Lisbon on 6 December, at the end of a tour of several countries that is also to take in the UK and Morocco, the US State Department announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the State Department said that Pompeo would travel to Morocco on 4 and 5 December “to review our countries’ strong economic and security partnership. Secretary Pompeo will also discuss areas for future U.S.-Moroccan cooperation within the framework of the U.S.-Morocco Strategic Dialogue.” That is following a North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in London on 3 and 4 December, where he is to be in the delegation led by US President Donald Trump.

From Morocco, Pompeo is to fly on to Lisbon, as the final stage of his tour.

“On December 6, the Secretary will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, where he will meet with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa and Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva,” the US statement reads. “The leaders will reaffirm the robust U.S.-Portugal relationship and will discuss U.S.-Portuguese cooperation across a wide range of interests.”

Portugal’s government has not yet confirmed Pompeo’s visit.
