Professionals in activities with contact with the public must wear a mask, starting at 00:00 on Wednesday, the Regional Government of Madeira decided today.

The Regional Government Council today took several measures to be in force in the Madeira archipelago during the state of emergency decreed by the President of the Republic until May 2.

"It is necessary to act with prudence and without precipitations, we cannot make mistakes, under penalty of everything changing from one day to the next and the number of infected people starts to grow in an uncontrollable way", justified the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, to the refer to the "necessary phasing" in restrictive measures and the resumption of economic activity.

The Government warns that the virus is not eradicated in the region, "despite the good results achieved so far with the efforts of the entire population".

"We cannot mitigate preventive measures, either in scientific or practical terms. It has recently been proven that the use of masks by the community contributes positively to reducing the risk of contagion. Therefore, we recommend the use of masks throughout population as we mitigate restrictive measures ", said the government official.

This recommendation, however, stressed Miguel Albuquerque, becomes "mandatory as of 00:00 on April 22 for professionals and personnel from all activities with contact with the public".

The Government, however, says that there are three measures that will continue in force in the period of this state of emergency, because "they have proved to be fundamental for the control of the pandemic in Madeira".

These include the control of external accessibility, the closure of ports and marinas in the region and the strong restriction on air accessibility, the mandatory quarantine for disembarked passengers, as well as temperature control.

For the Government of the PSD / CDS coalition, that control "allowed the regional health authorities to control and monitor imported cases, thus avoiding contagion from other countries and regions".

Residential confinement of the older population and a ban on home visits, as well as a ban on gathering people and social isolation as a rule will also continue to apply.

The Government decided to authorize, from 00:00 on Monday, the reopening of the activities of the extractive, manufacturing, civil construction and related industries, which will have to comply with "strict and imperative measures of operation, either under the respective contingency plans. companies, either in accordance with the recommendations of the regional health authority ".

These measures concern, in particular, the transportation of professionals, social distance, temperature control, acts of personal and collective hygiene, periodic disinfection of workplaces and dining places and the mandatory use of a mask.

As for the reopening of commercial activity and the provision of services, the Government indicates that at the end of next week it will assess the situation and "take appropriate measures".

With regard to the bathing season, the Government claims to be "premature to decree the end of the bathing season at this time".

"We have to wait for the evolution of the pandemic and, closer to summer, take decisions safely and with a sense of balance", said Miguel Albuquerque, who thanked the contribution that the teaching staff, Social Security employees, from the Private Solidarity Institutions Social and caregivers have been providing the region at this time to combat the pandemic.
