The remaining 10% "are still blazing and need a lot of attention," according to the civil protection.

"An effort was made during the night by all the firefighters. Everyone is focused" Pedro Nunes, the commander of the Centre North District Grouping, said in a first update on Monday morning.

The districts of Castelo Branco and Santarem, affected by fires since the weekend, continue with maximum temperatures around 39/40ºC today and low humidity, so are still at maximum risk of fire.

Speaking on Monday, meteorologist, Madalena Rodrigues, said that today will be marked by hot weather, low humidity and moderate wind, a situation that is not "favorable to combat fires".

For the rest of Portugal on Monday there will be generally clear skies, although with some clouds on the west coast at the end of the morning and on the coastline throughout the day.

Tomorrow [Tuesday] a small drop in maximum temperature and slight increase in relative humidity in the northern interior is expected.

Because of the hot weather, Bragança, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre are under yellow fire warnings until 21:00 on Wednesday.

The trend is for a drop in temperatures in the northern and central interior regions between 3º-5ºC on Thursday.
