The beaches of Santo António and Monte Gordo, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, were closed to bathers shortly before 4pm yesterday afternoon due to the presence of coliform bacteria in the water.

As soon as analyses confirmed the bacteria, red flags were raised along the beaches. The results of new analyses were due to be released this morning. Vila Real de Santo António port captain Rui Andrade said the bacteria could have come from a passing vessel.
