According to meteorologist Madalena Rodrigues, temperatures are set to plummet on Saturday night with frost being widespread.

Most areas away from the coast should expect temperatures to hit negative figures.

She added that light rain in southern Portugal is expected to turn to snow in high-lying areas such as the Monchique mountain range in the Algarve.

The last time snow was recorded in the Algarve, was when light snow fell on 10 January 2009, repeating heavy snow seen five years before.

As a result, an initial yellow alert, which is second lowest out of four, has been issued due to the cold weather not expected to subside until well into Sunday.

Forecasts for Saturday night are that Lisbon will fall to three degrees Celsius, while Faro will drop to a low of four.

Elsewhere Oporto will see thermometers plummet to freezing, while Bragança and Guarda can expect lows of four below zero.
